Divers &Volunteers For International Cleanup Day

The Far Rockaway and Five Towns diving community, and local residents, are being called upon to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of International Cleanup Day on Sunday, September 18, at Beach 8 Street, starting at 8 a.m.

The Beach 8 Street cleanup committee needs help to target underwater and shoreline debris. Project AWARE Foundation, the diving industry’s leading environmental organization, coordinates underwater cleanup events, and urges divers and volunteers to jump into their wetsuits, pull on their gloves, and “make a splash for trash!”

“You do not need to be a diver to help,” said Mo Blinder, the site coordinator. “Our beach cleanup will collect debris on the beach and also under water. Bring your friends and family along, and help make clean waters a reality.”

Marshal Schiper, Captain Kirby Kurkomelis and Mo Blinder will be handing out collection bags and Project AWARE certificates to all that attend the Beach 8 cleanup.
