MSGR McClancy Basketball Boys Camp A Success
The camp directed by Coach Don Kent, the varsity boys’ basketball coach at MSGR McClancy High school for the past 23 years, and a summer resident of Rockaway Point, had the campers on the move all day.
The camp ran from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day and after morning attendance, the campers were given station to teach them the fundamentals of the game. Each league conducted a free throw shooting contest and a one-on-one contest. At the end of the day, a raffle took place where each camper had a chance to win a prize. One camper won twenty dollars when a coach sank a half court. Mr. Richard Kosik, president of the Student/Athlete Association gave the boys a very good lecture on academics and basketball at the camp last Thursday. On Friday, the last day of the camp, the playoffs were held and the kids had a chance to win trophies. A Mr. Hustle Award, and a Sportsmanship Trophy, was awarded to the boys in all three leagues. An awards ceremony attended by many parents was held at the end of the camp day. Coach Kent picked up the campers from Breezy Point, St. Francis De Sales Parish in Belle Harbor and Our Lady of Grace Parish in Howard Beach in an air conditioned van each day. The following boys attended the camp: Anthony Reyes and Chris Flores from Breezy Point, Connor Smith and Ciaran McGee from St. Francis De Sales Paris. Reyes wont he foul shooting contest and will be attending Poly Prep this fall. The camp was a fun learning experience for all the campers and all the games were competitive.
