Police Search For Sabbath Gunman

T he search for a suspect is on in Far Rockaway after a man was shot in the chest early last weekend as he walked home with his young son, police said.

The victim, a 40-year-old Hasidic man from Far Rockaway, was taking a shortcut near Hicksville Road and Beach 9 Street at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday – the Sabbath – when he was approached by another male, police said.

The stranger demanded cash and apparently became angered when the Hasidic man said he had no cash and explained that his religion forbids him from handling money on the Sabbath.

The man’s religious devotion was no excuse for the thug, a black male dressed in a red baseball cap, blue shirt, blue pants and a dark bandanna over his face. The would-be-mugger drew a small silver handgun – which looked like a bb or pellet gun – and shot the man one time in the chest, according to police sources. The gunman, said to be in his 20s, fled on foot towards Beach 9 Street.

Police said the victim, who remained conscious through the ordeal, was removed to Jamaica Hospital where he was in stable condition. The round in his chest appeared to be a small caliber bullet, according to a police source.

The victim’s son, who had just been picked up from school by his father, was brought to stay with his grandparents.

Police, who are investigating, ask anyone with information to call the 100 Precinct at (718) 868-3400 or (800) 577-TIPS.
