However, some younger thrill-seekers will have to wait a few more years to legally use these vehicles. Recently, Governor Pataki has announced that the minimum age requirement to operate personal watercraft (PWCs) will be raised to 14 years old. Current law requires any person between the ages of 10 and 18 to possess a safety certificate to drive any mechanically powered vessel, including PWCs. “This law is long overdue. New York is currently one of only three states that allow children to operate personal watercrafts at age 10 without any supervision of an adult. Today’s personal watercraft are bigger, faster, and more powerful than ever before,” said Assemblywoman Patricia Fiddington. Governor Pataki hopes that this new law will increase safety and awareness for water sports enthusiasts, especially for younger children. Fiddington added, “Increasing the operating age from 10 to 14 is a common-sense measure that will improve water safety for our families.”
