B.C. Vollies Parade August 19
By Alyssa Goldstein

  • The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department is in for a busy weekend with a four-day carnival that began Thursday and a parade honoring the department’s 100th anniversary set for tonight, Friday, August 19.

The carnival will continue through Sunday, August 21 starting at 6 p.m. each night at the American Legion Hall located at 1st Road and Cross Bay Boulevard. There will be games, rides and food.

The parade will be celebrated on Friday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. It will start at 17th Road Park and end at American Legion Hall.

Ed O’Hare, president of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department told The Wave that although there is a carnival every year “this is the first parade we’ve had in five years,” the last time being for the fire department’s 95th anniversary celebration.

The BCVFD has another cause for celebration thanks to a bill signed by Senator Hillary Clinton that includes funds provided by Congressman Anthony Weiner, making the total amount $1.8 million available for all necessary reconstructive work that needs to be done on the firehouse.

Onlookers should expect to see many beaming smiles, flashing lights and blaring sirens during Friday’s parade since this is the first chance that volunteers’ have had to celebrate since receiving that good news.

O’Hare said that he thinks everyone is in for a good time. “We hope everyone will come and celebrate,” he said.
