Some Cool Fun On A Hot Day

Using a spray cap, children on Beach 16 Street in Far Rockaway enjoy the cool feeling of water from a hydrant on a recent hot day. The New York City Office of Emergency Management has reminded city residents to obtain a free city-approved spray cap from a local firehouse to legally open a fire hydrant. Illegally opened fire hydrants waste 1,000 gallons of water per minute. They also reduce needed water pressure to medical facilities and in case of a fire. If you see an illegally opened hydrant, call 311 to report it. Photo by Miriam Rosenberg
