A Far Rockaway man was arrested on Queens Boulevard last Friday morning after the woman whose car and purse he tried to steal fought him off, police said. The attempted robbery unfolded at about 8:30 a.m. on 63 Road in Flushing when Darryl R. Allen, 41, jumped into the passenger seat of a car occupied a 57-year-old woman, according to court records. Allen, of 57-15 Shore Front Parkway, latched onto the woman’s arm at first, but she freed herself from his grip and quickly exited her vehicle. Allen then slid into the drivers seat. Once behind the wheel, Allen tried to start up the car by turning the ignition key, but the engine was already running.

Allen then grabbed the woman’s purse, which was inside the vehicle, but she put up a fierce struggle..

“She managed to wrestle away [the] purse from [Allen],” court records say.

Allen eventually gave up and fled on foot, but cops caught up with him. He is charged with second-degree attempted robbery, first-degree attempted unauthorized use of a vehicle and third-degree attempted robbery, according to a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. Judge Suzanne Melendez set bail at $100,000 cash/bond. Allen is due back in court on August 5.
