“Power is expected to be restored by Saturday at the latest,” said Don Miller, a spokesman for R.Y. Management Co. Inc, which manages the complex. Miller said that buildings are still using six emergency generators on loan since last Monday from the Long Island Power Authority. Buildings one, three, five, seven, nine and eleven were affected by the power outage on Sunday, July 17. Ocean Village constituents contacted City Councilman James Sanders Jr., who helped out by calling in the Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross. The complex’s community center was converted into a site that provided relief from the heat, and Sanders reportedly stayed until the next morning to ensure that plans were in the works to bring the buildings back online until the problem could be rectified. Nadia Charles, the Tenant Association President for Ocean Village, said, “The tenants of Ocean Village would like to say thank you to Councilman Sanders, the management staff, and the Red Cross for their help.” Despite the collaborative effort to retrieve power, many residents had to throw out refrigerator loads of food and some had to be taken to the hospital after their insulin was destroyed due to lack of refrigeration, sources said. The Ocean Village complex has 11 buildings, which range from 4 to 19 stories high. More than 1,000 people live there. While Miller told The Wave the source of the building’s electrical woes had not been pinpointed, he said there are electrical cables that were corroded by exposure to salt water and needed to be replaced.
