for larger version       SJEH To Host Blood Drive August 4 As a result of the recent wave of extreme humidity and high temperatures, blood donations fell by 25 percent, leaving the community blood supply at risk and in a critical state, according to officials at the New York Blood Center. These officials urge anyone eligible to donate blood. St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, South Shore, will be hosting a blood drive on Thursday, August 4, 2005, from 10:30 am to 4 pm in the Hospital Board Room. The Hospital is located at 327 Beach 19 Street. The heat wave affected the ability of donors to get out to donate and at the same time increased the demand for blood. “Our supply of some blood types, including O Positive, O Negative, A Negative and B Negative, is so low we have been forced to ration distribution to area hospitals because we simply don’t have enough to go around,” explained Dr. James Louie, New York Blood Center Vice President. In an effort to help boost blood donations, the New York Blood Center received a variance from the New York State Department of Health to allow donations from 16-year-olds in New York with written parental permission. Blood donors must be age 16 to 75 (those 76 years of age and older must bring a doctor’s note), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in generally good health. The Blood Center provides all blood drives with highly skilled, professional staff, sterile equipment, donor beds and refreshments.
