Beach Channel Crew Girls Row At Empire State Games
By Elio Velez

The Beach Channel Crew team of Christina Rich, Alexandra Feliciano, Magdalania Kochanek and Nicole Pierce, posing with fellow teammate Nicholas Isabella, will compete in the 26th Annual Empire State Games.
Beach Channel High School Crew Team recently completed a banner season. Winning 12 gold medals, the only crew team in New York City had its most successful season in their 30+ year history.

At West Point on May 21, the girls JV 4 team of Christina Rich, Alexandra Feliciano, Magdalania Kochanek and Nicole Pierce won the gold medal. It was the last event of the crew season for the Dolphins but not for the four girls.

The JV 4 team was invited by a developmental crew team from Bronx High School of Science to the Peter J. Sharp Boathouse in the Harlem River a few weeks ago. Watching the challenge match between the two schools was Manhattan College Women Crew Coach Karla Ward. Impressed by their performance, she asked them if they wanted to continue rowing.

“She saw us perform and then invited us to tryout for the Empire State Games,” Nicole Pierce said.

The Empire State Games is a week long event that features athletes from all over New York State to compete in various sports. The JV 4 team qualified in the tryout held for the games and will perform at Marist College in Poughkeepsie starting on July 27. For the next 2 months, the four girls’ crew season will continue.

“It was good because we didn’t want the stop rowing. We were too good to stop,” Pierce says. “It gives Christina (a senior who will attend Hunter College) a chance to compete one last time before she goes to college.”
