Biathlon Run Honors Memory And Good Cause
By Elio Velez

Sixteen year old Breezy Point resident and Xavier High School student Ryan Woerner was aiming to set up a triathlon event this summer.

Woerner has had experience running in races such as the Rockaway Rotary Ocean Run and the Buckley’s to Kennedy’s Run at Riis Park. While in preparation, a family friend told him that it might be a good idea to honor someone in conjunction with the event.

The event, which will be the First annual Breezy Point Biathlon on July 9, will raise funds for the family of Mary Ellen Fullum. The mother of three young daughters died early this year on March 21 due to cancer. Woerner agreed to it and received immediate support from the family, the Breezy Point cooperative and many sponsors to hold the event.

“I knew her older daughter from all of the races. I wasn’t aware that she (Mary) passed but a friend of my mother said I should have the race for her,” Woerner said.

The biathlon will be a 1.5 mile run, a 3 mile bike run and a .35 mile run will take place at the Sugarbowl in Breezy Point starting at 10 a.m. There will be a $20 fee to race includes t-shirt, awards and a post race party. No application will be taken the day of the race. For more info, call Maura Buckley at 718-945-2300 or Ryan Woerner at 718-634-4101. The race will be open to males and females from ages 10-60+. Most importantly, it helps out a family in a time of need. Donations from $50 to $200 can be made to The Breezy Point Cooperative, c/o Fullum Run. Mail it to 202-30 Rockaway Point Boulevard, Rockaway Point, NY 11697.
