for larger version       Cyclones Start Fifth Season With Wilson At Helm The Brooklyn Cyclones will get their fifth minor league season underway at home on Tuesday. The short season Rookie A ball team will take on their crosstown rivals, the Staten Island Yankees, starting at 7 p.m. Expect the usual local dignitaries like Mayor Bloomberg to arrive to watch the Cyclones and new manager Mookie Wilson to take over the squad. As a member of the 1986 Mets championship team and more famously for his game winning RBI grounder the legs of Bill Buckner in Game 6, Wilson will bring more than 25 years of baseball experience in his next managerial stint. The last two seasons, Wilson has managed the Kingsport Mets rookie short season team. He was previously a first base coach under former Mets’ manager Bobby Valentine. Wilson will manage a team that is expected to be a mix of recently drafted players and those with one or two years in the New York Mets minor league system. 48 players from high school, junior college and college were selected in this year’s draft. Queens born and Xaverian High School pitcher Pedro Beato is one of the six New York born players that can sign with the Mets. The 2004 season was another successful one for Brooklyn as they finished first in the McNamara Division with a 43-31 record. Outfielder Ambiorix Concepcion was given the Sterling award after leading the team in homeruns, stolen bases and outfield assists. Fellow outfielders Dante Brinkley and Derran Watts are tearing up the ball at High Class A Hagerstown. Jose Sanchez, who had a brief cup of coffee with Brooklyn, leads Hagerstown with 9 wins. The Cyclones will honor the 50th anniversary of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ World Series Championship on Saturday, July 23 at 6 p.m. The fifth anniversary will honor alumni and will distribute bobbleheads of Mookie Wilson and radio announcer Warner Fusselle.
