Mormon Missionaries Help Clean Whalemena

Eighteen missionaries from the Lynbrook District of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, under the tutelage of Geoff Rawling, president of the Rockaway Artists Alliance, recently gave “Whalemena The Whale” a facelift. Rawling has been spearheading the project for more than two years.
The missionaries shined the massive mosaic mammal as part of a community service project and came from as far away as Korea, Italy, Australia, Germany, Hawaii, Alberta, Washington State, Arizona, Utah and southern California.
The painstaking cleaning process involved carefully scraping the mosaic tiles with razor blades and gently cleaning with solvents. The work, however, is not done, and the missionaries will be continuing their work on several Wednesday mornings to come.
