Meyer Buchman Computer Science Ace

  • Meyer Buchman, a Rockaway resident for more than 40 years, died November 30. He was 44.
  • Despite serious medical problems since childhood, Buchman graduated with honors from Human Resources Center in Albertson, New York. He graduated cum laude from Nassau Community College and Hofstra University, with Associates and Bachelors of Science Degrees in Computer Science. Buchman enjoyed traveling, sports, movies, museums, and parks. Family members said he never let his physical handicaps get in the way of enjoying life. He was also a computer science ace, and looked forward everyday going on his computer.

    Buchman is survived by his mother, Charlotte; his father, George; sister, Deborah; brother, Barry; and friends.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Boulevard-Riverside Chapels in Hewlett, New York. Contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 5 Dakota Drive, Suite 101, Lake Success, New York 11042 in Meyer Buchman’s name.

    Alice V. Connelly

    Retired Secretary

    Alice V. Connelly, a Rockaway resident for nearly 40 years, died December 27.

    Connelly, a retired secretary, was born in Manhattan. She spent many summers in the Rockaways before permanently moving here in 1966.

    She is survived by her sister, Ann Davis; nieces, Geraldine Hackett and Kathleen Davis; nephew-in-law, Thomas Hackett; and cousins, Brother John C. O’Neill, Robert O’Neill, Robert O’Neill, Dan, Carol, and Heather Skelly.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Camillus Church. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, New York.

    Edgar J. Hellriegel

    Engineer

    Edgar J. Hellriegel, a longtime Rockaway resident, died December 28.

    Hellriegel, a retired engineer for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, was born in Queens. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Hellriegel was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

    He is survived by his wife, Muriel E. Hellriegel (nee Brush) of Stuart, Florida and Rockaway Point, New York; daughters, Nancy D. Rasmussen of Rockaway Point, Barbara J. Arbogast of Hampton, Virginia, Susan J. Jeffers of Anniston, Alabama, and Diane P. Hellriegel of Rockaway Point; and grandson, Eric Rasmussen.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday, December 30, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church in Rockaway Point on Saturday, December 31 at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn.

    Harvey Louis Pederson

    Carpenter

    Harvey Louis Pederson, a Rockaway resident for 30 years, died December 25.

    Pederson, a retired carpenter and member of the Local 608, was born in Manhattan. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Pederson was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Rockaway Council and the VFW in New Jersey; and was a member of the Moose and Eagles Club in Florida.

    Pederson was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Sheridan.

    He is survived by his companion, Molly Abruzzo; sons, John and Harvey Pederson; daughter, Barbara Hayes; brother, William Pederson; sister, Jane Baldwin; grandchildren, Helen Fischer, Jane O’Donnell, Elizabeth Boyle, Barbara Hayes, and Michael Bennett; and great-grandchildren, Amber and Samantha Fischer, and Michael Boyle.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
