Christmas Weekend Full of Festive Basketball Fun

The St. Francis teams took to the road this weekend with the Christmas Tournament occupying the gym. The Girls Subnovice B’s ventured to St. Adalbert’s and spent the first half warming up as they were held scoreless. They turned the tables in the second half with Cassie Moriarty leading the way. Emma Michaels and Kayla Kilgallen also scored while Kimberly Sluyk keyed the second half shutout of St. Adalbert’s.

The Pee Wee A’s saw their recent hot streak come to a pause as they lost to Gate of Heaven and St. Stan. Marissa Scotto’s clutch free throw shooting was decisive as the Novices edged St. Margaret 11-8. The girls followed up with a 22-12 win over OLA behind 12 points from Taylor Butigan. The Bantams moved to 10-0 as they beat St. Thomas More 24-14. Erin Klein and Hannah Kelly controlled the boards and thereby the pace of the game. Paige Whelan and Deirdre Ray supplied the offense. The Rookies are playing like veterans now. Rebecca Moers led the offense in a 29-19 win at St. Stan while Kathryn Foris and Danielle Farragher once again were the defensive stalwarts. Moers and Farragher combined with Annette Scotto to fuel a 48-14 roll over Our Lady of Grace, while Taylor Conroy earned kudos for her defense.

The Intermediates squeezed past St. Adalbert 32-31 as Jen Boyle scored 13, Kathryn Edwards 9 and Allison Dunn 6. Caroline Clark, Molly McNulty, and Jessica Iori provided the passing, rebounding and defensive support.

The boys were particularly busy, fitting in their regular games around their tournament schedule. The Subnovice B’s had an exciting game at OLPH. Anthony Scotto. Jordan Asbury, John Whelan and Augie Ameruso were the offensive stars. Michael Tammaro, John Meringolo, Thomas Baldrian, Luke Gersh, Matt Savastano, Michael Urban, and Bard Featherston excelled on defense, and controlled the boards and the tempo. The PeeWee B’s cruised past OLG 29-13. Patrick Cashin and Michael Buckley score 8 each. Ryan Schonfeld added 5 and Owen McVeigh 4.

The Novices won at St. Thomas Apostle in their 3 rd game of the weekend. The Bantams beat St. Helen 38-30. The Rookies lost in a surprise at Nativity. The Intermediates continued their impressive play beating St. Thomas Apostle 62-41 as Patryk Grabowski tallied 14 and Vincent Esposito 11.

Week 2 of the St. Francis Christmas Tournament begins with 4 games on Monday 12/26 starting at 5:30. Tuesday and Wednesday will also include 4 games followed by the Championships on Thursday and Friday with three games each night. Early round action has been exciting so make a point to get over to the St. Francis gym this week. A full wrapup will follow after the tournament.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.
