Stella Maris Hosts Bishop Ford Today

Stella Maris’ Varsity Basketball team has started off their season with 2 league wins sandwiched between 2 non-league losses. However, the team has played some of its best ball, in the young season, during the two losses. No longer considered a young and inexperienced team; the Lady Flippers are expected to focus and play consistently for the entire game. With seven seniors, three juniors and a sophomore returning this year the team’s inconsistency is a bit perplexing.

The team hosts Bishop Ford this Friday then travels to Mary Louis on Sunday. A league game at Font Bonne (on Tuesday) will be followed by two Christmas tournament games at Our Lady of Mercy (Long Island). This stretch of games will offer SM an opportunity to show what they are capable of. SM’s Junior Varsity squad has also tipped off their season. A league loss to St. Joseph’s served as a not-so-welcoming introduction to high school basketball for this year’s team. The team’s first victory came this past Wednesday at Bishop Loughlin (29-19). Deirdre Sacca’s shooting touch, Stephanie Quick’s hustle and Melissa Hahn’s rebounding efforts led the way. While SM’s Varsity returns a full roster, the same cannot be said for the JV. This year’s team consists of 14 players: 10 of them freshman and a new coach. John Raphael, after three highly successful seasons (including a trip to the championship game), has stepped down and the reins have been passed to Richie Knott. Coach Knott is very optimistic about this year’s team and expects his players to compete for every possession. The JV also plays at home on Friday and at Font Bonne next Tuesday.

Flipper footnotes: congrats to JV and Mr. K on their first win! To MC and CC our prayers and thought are with you and your family. JV: were you going to use your hands as cups? MG enjoy the phone and happy birthday.
