(NYPD) and the Department of Education (DOE) work hand-in-hand to ensure safety in New York City’s schools. The NYPD’s School Safety Division is responsible for deploying school safety agents in the City’s schools and makes its deployment decisions based on current needs and resources.
Currently, there are three ranks of school safety agent: School Safety Agent Levels I, II and III.
According to a spokesperson for the council, the school safety agent position carries with it many diversified responsibilities. School safety agents are frequently exposed to dangerous and violent conditions in their workplaces. Such personnel may, and often do, incur serious injuries during the course of performing their official duties. School safety agents are twenty-four hour peace officers, must undergo and meet rigorous training and fitness qualifications and have job functions with potentially severe adverse physical consequences.
Reclassifying school safety agents into the competitive class would allow applicants for the position to be tested for appointment to the competitive class in a manner that factors in education and experience.
