Dolphins, Lady Seahorses Sweat Out Wins
Far Rockaway basketball coach Anthony Miele had all his weapons next to him on the bench just as they were about to battle Beach Channel last Friday. The problem was that key players such as John Jordan, Davion Harvey and Peyton Mullins were all dressed in street clothes and not in the Seahorses’ home whites.
The undermanned Seahorses were game and battled back from a twenty point deficit in the third quarter to take a 50-49 lead with 4:30 left in the fourth.
The Dolphins awoke from their second half slumber just in time to avoid an embarrassing loss as Davon Saxon and Dwayne Messam keyed a 10-1 run to give Beach Channel (3-0) a 64-56 win. Messam, who scored 19 points, gave a loud exhale after the game.
“Guys thought the game as over and everybody cut off our head. They came back we tied the game up. We did what we had to do and keep our head off and keep it moving,” Messam said.
With little practice time and their key players missing due to ineligibility or physical problems, Miele has had to scramble to just field a competitive squad. Now that they’re 0-3, Miele hopes that by today’s report card, those key players will return.
“I give my guys credit for coming back but right now we’re not a good team. I’m not upset because we fought hard.”
Lady Seahorses Eek Out Win
Far Rockaway didn’t have the easiest time in a 47-39 win over Hillcrest last Tuesday. It wasn’t just Coach Les Sabbah admitting his team, who improved to a 2-1 record, was less than stellar in their shaky performance; it was the players as well. The Seahorses allowed a tough but in experienced Hillcrest to hang around and cut the lead to 42-39 with a minute left. Shantee Goggins scored 25 points and Patrice McKenzie added 16.
“We got to get our minds focused on the game. We got to work on things. We’re a team and there’s no I in team so we got to get it together”, guard Shalaya Banks said.
Lady Dolphins Storm to 3-0
Antoinette Jolly scored 12 points and 10 assists, Tanya Nelson scored 14 points, grabbed 10 assists and Jasmine Strong pulled in 20 rebounds in a 63-46 win over John Adams last Tuesday.
