Karl Butigan Comptroller

  • Karl Butigan, a longtime Rockaway resident, died November 17.
  • Butigan, a comptroller, was born in the Bronx. He also served his country in the United States Army.

    He is survived by his brother, Avedis Butigan (Helen); and nieces and nephews, Michael (Rose), Maryann (Adam), Karl (Kathy), Mark (Marilyn), Joseph (Maureen), and Diane (John).

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at the Church of Holy Martyrs in Bayside. Interment was at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Bayside.

    Robert Klimowicz

    Former Broad Channel Resident

    Robert Klimowicz, a former Broad Channel resident, died October 27. He was 26.

    Klimowicz was born on April 5, 1979 in Far Rockaway. He was a Broad Channel resident for nine years, and attended PS 47 and JHS 180. After junior high, Klimowicz moved to California and graduated from Mojave High School.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher (Hanky) Klimowicz and Patricia Klimowicz.

    He is survived by his brother, Christopher; sister, Lauren Linschied; and many relatives and friends.

    Services were held on the island of Maui, Hawaii, where Klimowicz resided; and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in California City, California.

    Curtis Shivers

    Our Father’s House Holiness Member

    Curtis Shivers, a Rockaway resident for over 20 years, died November 15. He was 50.

    Shivers was born on September 3, 1954 in Elloree, South Carolina. He joined Our Father’s House Holiness Church under the leadership of Elder Robert Shivers, and was very active in Sunday school.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Lillie Mae Shivers; two brothers, Willie and James Jr.; and sister-in-law, Elder Sheila Shivers.

    He is survived by his son, Tariq Butler (Ester); grandchildren, Tariq Jr. and Princess Tariq; four brothers, Bishop Warren Shivers, Ernest, Maurice, and Pastor Robert Shivers; two sisters, Shirley Sellers and Maria Shivers; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Shivers, Renee Gaillard Shivers and Terry Shivers; special nephew, Jameen Shivers; special friend, Nadine Butler; and many relatives and friends.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home. Visitation and a service were held at Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.

    Harold Stein

    Rockaway Resident

    Harold Stein, a member of the Rockaway community for over 20 years, died November 18. He was 45.

    Stein was born on December 25, 1959 in Manhattan.

    He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Stein; sister, Catherine Messina; and brothers, Freddie and Carl Messina.

    He is survived by his sister, Deborah Pachuta; and brothers, Kenneth Messina and Philip Stein.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Rosehill Cemetery in Putnam Valley, New York.

    Catherine T. Washington

    Treasurer

    Catherine T. Washington, a Rockaway resident for 15 years, died November 20.

    Washington, a treasurer, was born in Brooklyn.

    She was preceded in death by her brothers, Reverend Peter Washington C.S.S.R., James, and John Washington.

    She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Washington and Ann Daly.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thomas More Church in Rockaway Point. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.

    Lillie Mae Washington

    Nurse’s Aide

    Lillie Mae Washington, a Rockaway resident for over 30 years, died November 16. She was 75.

    Washington, a nurse’s aide, was born on July 28, 1930 in Williston, South Carolina. She was a member of Culbert Branck Church in Williston, South Carolina.

    She was preceded in death by her son, Angus T. Washington; and Jacqueline E. Phillips.

    Washington is survived by her husband, Fred Smith; best friend, Madeline Rudolph; children, Bette, Roland Phillips (Lydia), Cecelia Phillips (Curtis Dicks, Jr.), and Vanessa Stokes; stepson, Robert Morton; brothers, Fred T. Milligan, Rev. Dr. James E. Dukes, and Fred Dukes; sisters, Dorothy Twiggs, Carolyn Hickson, and Lavonne Hector; twenty grandchildren; thirty one great grandchildren and one expected, and one great great grandchildren and one expected.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home. A service was held at Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
