Three Teams Win Championships
Three was the magic number for St. Francis de Sales soccer this season as three teams won the Diocesan championship, including both the girls and the boys south 3rd grade teams. The boys north 3rd grade team was runner-up.
The 7th grade girls team also won the crown. In all, 13 SFDS teams qualified for the playoffs.
The 3rd grade girls team was crowned Diocesan champs after an exciting shootout win versus Sacred Heart. The game was scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods. St. Francis prevailed 3-2 in the shootout. Both teams played extremely well and they should be commended for their competitive spirit and but more importantly their sportsmanship. St. Francis beat St. Thomas More 2-1 to advance to the finals.
The goals were scored by Max Frankel and Anthony Scotto with the support and strong play by their teammates.
The 7th grade girls team won a dramatic Diocesan championship game last Sunday against Our Lady of Hope 2-1.
Other teams that made the playoffs included the 8th grade girls, 7th grade boys, 5th grade girls and 4th grade girls. Coaches Hank Iori and Mike Lavin led the 8th graders to a 7-2 record. Guy Maranga’s 7th grade boys fell to St. Thomas More 3-1 but had a good, fun season.
The 5th grade girls lost to Sacred Heart in a shootout after a great season. It was the first time that they finished in 1st place in the Fall season. The 4th grade girls also lost in a shootout to Our Lady of Hope after a 0-0 semifinal battle. Goalie Daisy Trusttum finished the entire year without giving up a goal in regulation.
All these teams and players are grateful for the work of Ron McGrisken who organizes the entire St. Francis De Sales soccer program.
