Postage Prices Go Up

The United States Postal Service has announced that effective January 8, 2006, the cost of mailing a letter will increase to 39 cents. It is the first increase since June 2002.

The increase fulfills a requirement, passed by Congress in 2003, that the Postal Service establish a $3.1 billion account. Congress will later determine how to spend that money.

Other rate changes include:

First class letter (1 oz.)

- Up 2 cents to 39 cents.

First class letter (2 oz.)

- Up 3 cents to 63 cents.

Postcard

- up 1 cent to 24 cents.

Priority Mail (1 lb.)

- Up 20 cents to $4.05

Express Mail (8 oz.)

- Up 75 cents to $14.40.

Express Mail (2 lbs.)

- Up 95 cents to $18.80.

Certified Mail

- Up 10 cents to $2.40.

Money orders

- Up 5 cents to 95 cents.
