Dennis J. Acocella Mirror Installer and DJ
Acocella, a mirror installer and DJ, was born in Rockaway Beach on December 21, 1952. He lived in Rockaway for the first 42 years of his life before moving to Tucson, Arizona in 1995. Acocella was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima Church, where he was baptized, and attended PS 42, St. Camillus and JHS 180. He was married to Evelyn (Rodrigues) Acocella, also of Rockaway, until their divorce in the mid-90s.
Acocella was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Anna Acocella.
He is survived by his brother, Austin Acocella (Cathy); sister, Joanna Gulli (John); nieces, Lisa Gulli, Christina Gusse, Patricia Barbier, and Alyssa Acocella; and nephew, Ronald Gulli.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Pius X Church in Tucson, Arizona. Disposition was held at Mount Lemmon in Tucson, Arizona.
Louise Fogarty, a Rockaway resident for 45 years, died November 6. She was 89.
Fogarty, a retired secretary, was born in Manhattan.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Alfred Dalldorf; husband, Joseph Fogarty; and daughter, Dorine Giddings.
Fogarty is survived by her son-in-law, James Giddings; and grandsons, Scott and Gregg Giddings.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thomas More Church in Rockaway Point. Disposition was at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Viola Islyn May Gardner
Viola Islyn May Gardner, a Rockaway resident for over 15 years, died October 27. She was 72.
Gardner was born on January 18, 1933 in Portland, Jamaica.
She was preceded in death by her son, Kenroy; and granddaughter, Racquel.
Gardner is survived by her children, Dawn, Leroy and Basil; grandchildren, Trudy, Wayne, Teggagne, Marva, Marlon, Tarik, Marsha, Marvin, Dolletta, Mopilyn, Marsil, and Marilyn; ten great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home. Visitation was held at the First Baptist Church of Redfern in Far Rockaway. A service was held at the First Church of God in Far Rockaway. Interment was at Pinelawn Cemetery in Pinelawn, New York.
Jane McLaughlin, a Rockaway resident for 33 years, died November 8.
McLaughlin, a retired teacher from PS 256 and St. John’s Home, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her bachelor and master’s degrees from Brooklyn College.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Catherine Less; and sister, Catherine Coyle.
She is survived by her husband, Patrick McLaughlin; son, Geoffrey McLaughlin; grandsons, Kyle and Luke McLaughlin; and five nephews.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 13 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 14, 9:45 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales in Belle Harbor. Disposition will take place at Mount St. Mary in Flushing.
Rigoberto P. Santos
Rigoberto P. Santos, a Rockaway resident for 35 years, died November 6.
Santos, a retired ironworker, was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Yolanda Santos; brothers, Bernardo, Francisco, Enrique, and Mateo Santos; sisters, Enriqueta and Rosa Santos; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. Interment was held in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Donald H. Thompson
Donald H. Thompson, a Rockaway resident for over 20 years, died October 31. He was 59.
Thompson, a security guard, was born on September 23, 1946 in Mandiville, Jamaica.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela; mother, Carmen; aunt, Kathleen; mother of his daughters, Margerette Stroud; children, Donna-Marie, Tonya Monique and Michael Anthony; nieces, Ayanna, Tamisha and Breanne; grandchildren, Shane, Jourdan and Nathaniel; brother, Carlyle; sister, Valerie; brothers-in-law, Harvel and Leo; nephew-in-law, Marlon; cousins, the Housen’s, the Thomas’, the Blake’s, the Rhoden’s, the Livingston’s, the Reid’s, and the Dalie’s; and other family and friends.

Joseph Edward Young Sr.
Joseph Edward Young Sr., a Rockaway resident for over 40 years, died November 2. He was 62.
Young, an electrician, was born on June 4, 1943 in Harnett County, North Carolina. He served his country in the Army from 1965-1967. Young was also a member of First Baptist Church of Fuquay Springs, North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Lee and Cliffie Young; sister, Rosalee Collins; brothers, Thomas (Pete) and Cardell Young; and son, Jeovanni (Bam-Bam).
Young is survived by his wife, Laney; their six children, Joan Marie Fraser (Desmond), Janice Harmon (Leron), Joseph Edward Jr., Jason (Lashawnda), Jamie and Jeremy Young; children, Jonathan Young, Jovanna, Joseph, and Jolenna; grandchildren, Andrew, Kyle, Micaela Harmon, Shaniya Young, Candace Young, Derrick Mitchell, Shania Favor, and Kahliyah Favor; aunt, Sarah; brother-in-law, Clarence Collins; and other relatives and friends.
