St. Francis de Sales 4th Grade Soccer team #1 assured itself of a playoff berth with a 4-0 win over St. Gregory’s last Saturday.

Playing in cold conditions, SFDS #1 dominated play in the first half. Defenders Ginna Davin, Casey McDade, Anna Charles and Marina Cregan did not allow a single shot to get through to goalie Daisy Trusttum.

The first 15 minutes were scoreless as St. Francis struggled to get good shots through traffic. Finally, Therese Boyle burst into the box off a throw in and lifted an arcing shot over St. Gregory’s defense and high into the net. It was Therese’s ninth goal of the season.

The 1-0 score held for the first 10 minutes of sloppy second half play. Freed from her cage, Daisy gave St. Francis breathing room about 12 minutes in. She received a pass high in the box, sliced between two defenders and blasted the ball between the goaltender’s legs from 15 feet out. Inspired, SFDS #1 lifted the quality of its play. Shannon Twomey turned an excellent goal kick back into the box and fed Daisy for an easy score and a 3-0 lead just two minutes later.

Deirdre McCool forged the final score with her first goal of the season. Playing from the right side, Deidre slid into the middle of the box to receive a centering pass then coolly dribbled back to the right for a clear shot inside the post. St. Francis is 4-0-1.
