Jamaica Bay Harbor Heron Lecture

Gateway National Recreation Area’s Jamaica Bay Unit continues its scheduled presentations for the 2005 Herbert Johnson Lecture Series with a discussion on local herons and egrets.

This year’s topic is “Birds About The Bay.” On Wednesday, November 9 at 7 p.m. at Floyd Bennett Field’s Ryan Visitor, Yigal Gelb will speak about the herons and egrets that nest on islands right in Jamaica Bay. Gelb, Program Director for the New York City Audobon Society, will discuss local heron research, monitoring and habitat protection efforts. The final presentation in the series, “A Birder’s Year,” will be held on Wednesday, November 16. Well-known New York City naturalist and field ornithologist Starr Saphir will lead an armchair tour of birding Jamaica Bay throughout the year.

For more information on the lecture series, call (718) 338-3338, extension 225.
