Homecoming Day Success For Ravens Football
That was the headline for Homecoming Day for the Rockaway Ravens two weeks ago. Far Rockaway High School’s field was full of Purple and White jerseys as the Ravens homecoming could only be described in one word; FUN! Even the opposing team, the Springfield Rifles, couldn’t deny the radiance they possessed.
AYF league president/Renegades Coach Courtney and a few of his players came out to join in the celebration and to check out the competition for their game against the Ravens Jr. Midgets in Brooklyn. Last time the Ravens met the Renegades, the Midget teams fought tooth and nail with a 7-6 win going to Dexter’s Ravens, so Coach Courtney was looking for a little payback. Each team came out fired up. Not only was there chicken and macaroni and cheese but the Ravens also served up a side of winning with a Springfield Rifles meal on Saturday and Sunday.
Coach Tyrone’s Peanuts held down their wining streak by dominating on defense and wouldn’t let the Rifles see the end zone. Coach Jerome’s offense took a straight path to the goal in showing off some fancy plays and dishing out another shut out.
The Pee Wees kept the wining streak going by steam rolling down the field as fans saw Coach Bill even crack a smile during the last quarter.
The Junior Midgets finished off the Rifles. Coach Denise and Travis smiled as Quarterback Ollie Robinson made 2 strong passes that led to two of Davon Torres’ five touchdowns.
The Midgets game was a little more of a struggle as they pushed back and forth with the Rifles, who made the first touchdown which was followed by a Ravens touchdown taken in by Tyrek. Neither team completed the conversion. 6-6 was the final score and left each team tied for first place. The Junior Pee Wee and The Intro Team didn’t over take their opponents at homecoming but fought a good game.
WHO WILL GO TO THE PLAYOFFS?
Well it’s not hard to answer that question. Every Raven team sealed the deal this weekend. The Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wees advanced. The Junior Midgets went to Brooklyn and went against Coach Courtney’s Renegades. The Renegades kept the score 0-0 score until the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough because the Junior Midgets walked away with the 6-2 victory. And to top the victory off, Ravens President Coach Dexter hit the field with more then a two step as he gave a Rockaway shake at the last seconds of the game with the other coaches and parents joining in. Brooklyn belonged to the Ravens.
Twice the Ravens barely took home the victory from the Renegades. The Midgets and the Intro Teams got a win thru the forfeit of the other opposing teams. Next week the playoffs will begin with the Junior Midgets and Midgets going against the Springfield rifles. It’s an all or nothing weekend coming. Coach Mark & Coach Denise, you’ll have your hands full. Good Luck! Let’s Go Ravens! Let’s go!
