Fontbonne Hall Clinches Bk/Queens Volleyball Title
As the last week of the regular season closed, the Fontbonne volleyball squads completed a very successful season. On Tuesday the JV defeated Nazareth 2-0 (25-10, 25-14). Freshmen Kristine DeMasi and Gabby Coakley contributed to the victory.
On Wednesday the Bonnie JV clinched their second consecutive Brooklyn Championship by defeating the Bishop Ford Falcons 2-0 (25-4, 25-8). Paced by sophs Kelly Johnston, Jane Taikina and Liz Rogers, with support from freshmen April Shaughnessy and Kristine DeMasi the Bonnies were able to post an impressive win. In the second match the Varsity had several key players return to action and were able to cruise to an easy 3-0 (25-10, 25-6, 25-4) victory. Senior setter Angelica Fusco and forward Kristina Lundberg led the team.
Thursday found the Bonnies in Rockaway to face the Stella Maris Flippers. The JV had their toughest test of the season as they were missing two starters and the Flipper JV put on a determined effort. Led by sophs Kelly Johnston, Jane Taikina and Pam Mendoza the Bonnie freshmen April Shaughnessy, Maggie Sheehan, Gabby Coakley and Kristine DeMasi stepped up to provide the play needed to squeak out a 2-1 (25-20, 22-25, 15-5) victory. This win completed the regular season for the JV. The Varsity were able to follow up with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-15) win. The Bonnies attack was led by Alair Sheehan, Patty Moran, Liz Lang and Angelica Fusco, with support from Kristina Lundberg, Julie Stewart, Caitlin Carley, and Janine Crevelli.
On Friday the Varsity faced off against St. Edmunds in the final regular season match of the season. Prior to the game the two senior players were honored for their contributions to Fontbonne Volleyball over the past four years. Senior co-captains Patty Moran and Angelica Fusco were congratulated by their teammates, fellow students, coaches, faculty, and parents. In the match that followed both Fusco and Moran were able to lead the Bonnie Varsity to victory 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-9). The entire Fontbonne family hopes that Patty and Angelica will continue their success in all their future endeavors.
As the regular season ends the JV has finished a second consecutive undefeated season (10-0) winning the Brooklyn title. They will get a first round bye in playoff action, and return to play in the semi-finals of the Brooklyn-Queens in early November. The Varsity finished 12-2, firmly in second place in Brooklyn. They will resume action in the quarter finals against the third place Queens team on November 2nd.
