Lecture Series On Jamaica Bay Birds
Gateway National Recreation Area’s Jamaica Bay Unit announced its schedule for the 2005 Herbert Johnson Lecture Series. This year’s lecture topic is: Birds About the Bay. Three free presentations will be held on consecutive Wednesday evenings.
Wednesday, November 2: Bay Birds Photo Essay- Nature photographer Johann Schumacher will present his photographs of Jamaica Bay birds and bird habitats, and share his experiences at the bay that inspired his work. Schumacher’s award-winning photographs have appeared in Audubon Magazine, Natural History Magazine, Birder’s World and WildBird.
Wednesday, November 9: Harbor Herons -Yigal Gelb, Program Director for New York City Audubon, will speak about herons and egrets that nest on islands right on Jamaica Bay. He will discuss local heron research, monitoring and habitat protection efforts.
Wednesday, November 16: A Birder’s Year- Jamaica Bay is a birding mecca any time of year. Its varied habitats provide abundant food and cover for wintering fowl, spring land bird migrants and nesting birds. Field Ornithologist Starr Saphir will take you from one birder’s traditional New Year’s Day visit, through the panorama of the seasons, to year’s end.
