Headaches
By Dr. Nancy Gahles

DR. nancy gahlesDR. nancy gahles The child who wakes up in the morning with a headache presents a certain concern to the parents. In the absence of obvious signs of acute infection such as lethargy and fever, it is incumbent upon the parent to understand the nature of the child who is exhibiting this symptom, particularly if it is a frequent occurrence. When headaches in the morning present themselves in autumn, I ask questions. Does your child worry about going to school? Does your child have difficulty concentrating? Does your child get a headache after studying hard or for long periods at a time?

Certain factors inherent in the typical classroom are triggers for children with susceptibility to headaches. These people can be very sensitive to bright lights, strong odors or the misbehavior of others. Children who cannot bear the smell of the lunchroom often come home with a headache. These children have difficulty with comprehension and association of ideas; they lack the words to express their ideas; when writing they may forget syllables and entire words. They can read but cannot understand a short sentence. Their head pain makes them very irritable, distracted and nothing seems to be able to satisfy them. A homeopathic remedy that is specific to this type of child is Colchicum, Autumn Crocus. This plant has an affinity for joints and can exhibit symptoms of gout and redness, swelling and heat of small joints as well as the diarrhea of autumn. The most telling sign that you or your child needs Colchicum in this season is the great sensitivity to odors and ailments from the rudeness of others.

Headaches that are worse in the morning and worse from mental exertion that progress to sinus infection can arise in children who need a remedy called Gelsemium, Yellow Jasmine. The nature of this child is such that they have anticipatory anxiety before school and particularly before examinations, which is why the headache progresses to a deeper level as we progress into the school year. Test taking or speaking in public literally paralyzes this person. Their knees become weak and shaky and their mouths dry up and they need open air. They are susceptible to taking cold at the change of weather and so the same symptoms will be present in a flu or virus. Great weakness and trembling, desire to be held, no thirst. People who need Gelsemium have dread of ordeals, new situations or bad news. Their headaches are characterized by heaviness, fullness or a feeling of a band around the head. The expression is one of glazed, heavy lidded eyes and a flushed, hot face. A key symptom your child might tell you is that they get double vision. This is why these children have difficulty concentrating and reading. They have slow accommodation due to the muscle weakness and when turning the eyes, the sense of sight is delayed following the movement. Things appear to be blurred for several seconds. A diagnosis of visual processing or visual accommodation deficit may be given.

The appropriate treatment in both of these cases is homeopathic therapy. A headache that proceeds from direct causation, has a predictable nature and is characteristic to the person who needs to be treated at the constitutional level. That is to say that we are each unique individuals responding to the environment and its stresses in our own way, with our own sensitivities.

To remove the cause of disease and restore health is the highest goal of any practitioner. This can only be accomplished when we observe the nature of the person and the display of symptoms that lead us to a remedy in nature that is compatible with the state before us.

Dr. Samuel Hahnemann puts it beautifully in his epic work, The Organon of The Medical Art, when he speaks about the principles of cure and the life force in health and disease. He says, “In the healthy human state, the spirit-like life force (autocracy) that enlivens the material organism as dynamis, governs without restriction and keeps all parts of the organism in admirable, harmonious, vital operation, as regards both feeling and functions, so that our indwelling, rational spirit can freely avail itself of this living, healthy instrument for the higher purposes of our existence”.

We are indeed, more than the sum of our parts. We are whole, dynamic entities who deserve to be treated in that manner. The mechanistic view of health and disease is a model which is clearly outdated. Mind-body science and the fields of quantum physics demonstrate principles of therapeutic action existing far beyond organ therapy and into the realms of prayer and spirituality.

The government’s own National Institute of Health sponsors conferences and research into the areas of energy medicine and it’s mind-body implications. It is high time we look at our children as whole persons and treat them accordingly. When your child has a headache in the morning and has apprehension about school, it would be a good parenting decision to inquire within... for therein lies the answer to their Universe. And by all means, ask for help. There are qualified practitioners in many of the Complementary and Alternative disciplines listed online through their national organizations.
