Shawana Tisha Barefield-Small Home Health Aide

  • Shawana Tisha Barefield-Small, a lifelong Far Rockaway resident, died October 4. She was 35.
  • Barefield-Small, a home health aide, was born on February 1, 1970 in Far Rockaway. She was a member of the Christ Church Center of Hope.

    She is survived by her daughter, Syquana Mickens; parents, Richard and Roxann Small; brothers, Kahlil, Ian, Christopher and Devon Small; grandmother, Vivian Small; aunts, Reva Magazine, Barbara Hudson, Valerie Small, and Sadina Small; uncles, Clarence Barefield, George Small, Carlton Small, James Small, Kevin Small and Andre Small; special friend, Allen Mickens; and other relatives and friends.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, with visitation and services at Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. Disposition was at Oxford Hills Crematory.

    Clifford C. Barker

    New York City Transit

    Authority Worker

    Clifford C. Barker, a Rockaway resident for 44 years, died October 6.

    Barker, a car inspector for the New York City Transit Authority, also served his country in the army during World War II.

    He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Schmiedel Barker, and his sister, Doris Carroll.

    He is survived by his daughters, Susan Reid and Helen Morabit; five grandchildren; and his companion, Rene Griffin.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Genevieve Church in Roxbury. Other arrangements were kept private.

    Arlene Cochran

    Transit Clerk

    Arlene Cochran, a Rockaway resident for more than 20 years, died September 28. She was 62.

    Cochran, a transit clerk, was born on February 13, 1942 in Brooklyn.

    She is survived by her children, Desiree (Thomas), Dereck (Nita) and Frank (Rhoda); grandchildren, Keisha, Kaadeedria, Dashawn, Timothy, Khalif, Ttreem, Kasiem, Ciara and unborn baby Cochran; sister, Emma; godson, Savior Callender; best friend, Amy Tinsdale; friends, Ms. Cathy, Ms. Ulove and Ms. Anne; and other relatives and friends.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, with visitation and services held at Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.

    Dorothy Glinnen

    Met Life Inspector

    Dorothy Glinnen, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died October 10.

    Glinnen, an inspector for Met Life, was born in Brooklyn, New York.

    She is survived by her nephew, Dennis Glinnen.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday, October 14 from 9-10 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Camillus Church on Friday, October 14, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside.

    Arthur Nash Hamp Jr.

    Foreman

    Arthur Nash Hamp Jr., a Far Rockaway resident for more than 25 years, died September 30. He was 56.

    Hamp, a foreman, was born in Jamaica, Queens on December 7, 1948. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country for eight years, working as an airplane mechanic. He served an 18-month tour in Vietnam.

    Hamp was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and sister-in-law, Deirdre Barre Grubb.

    He is survived by his wife, Glenda Hamp; sister, Donna Hamp; daughters, Athena Hamp People (Curtis) and Raven Hamp; sons, Barre Hamp, Arthur Hamp III (Aretha) and Rashawn Busky; grandsons, Rashawn Haynes and John Ryan Hamp; granddaughters, Jerae and Jelene; cousin and best friend, Curtis Hamp; and other relatives and friends.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, with visitation and services held at Gaffney’s Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.

    Anthony P. Nardi

    NY Telephone Repair Technician

    Anthony P. Nardi, a Rockaway resident for 55 years, died October 8.

    Nardi, a repair technician for New York Telephone, was born in Inwood, New York. He served his country in the army during World War II, and was a member and past Commander of the Daniel M. O’Connell American Legion Post 272.

    He is survived by his wife, Marie Bellomo Nardi; sons, Anthony and Thomas Nardi; daughters, Elizabeth Nardi and Barbara O’Shea; sisters, Rose Szucs, Mary Takats, and Elaine Greco; and grandchildren, Steven and Cara O’Shea.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Camillus Church. Interment was at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Pinelawn, New York.

    Darren J. Smith

    Rockaway Resident

    Darren J. Smith, a Rockaway resident for more than 20 years, died September 23. He was 40.

    Smith was born on February 10, 1965 in Brooklyn.

    He is survived by his parents, Lillian and George Smith; two sisters, Michelle and Audrey Smith; brother, Kenneth St. Smith; two nieces, Cynthia L. Smith and Sharon R. Smith; four nephews, Masters Kenneth Smith Jr., Lathon C. Smith, Jerrod L. Smith, and Ta Keem K. Smith; grandfather, Frank Scott (Evelyn); great-aunt, Annie Mae Mitchell; four aunts, Alma Simmons, Janice Davis (Robin), Mattie Morton (Robert), Regina Jackson; four uncles, Sammy Simmons, Moses Simmons, Richard Jackson, and Shonn Jackson; and other relatives and friends.

    Barbara Stephens

    Barbara Stephens, a lifelong Far Rockaway resident, died October 5. She was 50.

    Stephens, a telephone operator, was

    born on February 21, 1955 in Queens. She was an active member of

    Saint John’s Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Jackson. She was also a member of the junior choir and usher board.

    She is preceded in death by her father, Robert; son, Elton; sister, Helen and her children’s father, Teleford; aunts, Idella Dennis and Mattie Copper; and uncles, Ernest, Wardell and Willie.

    She is survived by her mother, Grace; son, Derrick; daughter-in-law, Novella; daughter, Shantay; sister, Veronica Davis; brother-in-law, Dennis Davis; brother, Robert Lee, Jr.; sister-

    in-law, Tonya; grandchildren,

    Derrick Jr., Shavella, Darius, Dyrell, Destiny and Diamond; goddaughter, Sabrina; nephews, Dennis Jr., Eugene, Kyle and Timothy; and nieces, Denise, Kia and Kayla.
