Volleyball Locals Sparks Fontbonne In Victories

On September 20, the Fontbonne Varsity and JV volleyball teams returned to action facing Stella Maris High School in home action. Both the Varsity and JV were able to overcome some early miscommunication and the tenacity of the Stella squad to post impressive wins. The Varsity won 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17) while the JV won 2-0 (25-7, 25-20).

September 23, found the Bonnies traveling to Bishop Loughlin High School to face a very tough opponent. Again the Bonnies triumphed as the Varsity came charging back from a 2-1 deficit to nip Loughlin in a marathon match, 3-2. Led by senior setter and co-captain Angelica Fusco, and junior hitters Kristine Lundberg, and Alair Sheehan, the Bonnies over came the heat and a large partisan Loughlin crowd to claim victory.

The JV overcame some early miscues to defeat Loughlin’s JV 2-0 (25-20, 25-11). Paced by freshman setter Maggie Sheehan and relying on their hitting trio of Liz Rogers, Jane Taikina, and Kelly Johnston, the Bonnies settled down and countered the best Loughlin had to offer. Libero Pamela Mendoza put up a strong serving performance to secure the second game and the match. On September 28th, the Bonnies Varsity faced off with St. Edmunds, and again were able to post their third win of the season, 3-0. The team was led by the serving of Alair Sheehan and Megan Dolan. Finally as September comes to a close the Varsity was able to overcome a tenacious Saint Saviour’s squad at home, 3-0. As September ends, Fontbonne’s record stands at 4-1 loss at the Varsity level, while the JV is at 3 wins and 0 losses.
