Bishop Kearney High School’s lay faculty and their union established a $1,000 dollar scholarship in honor of Captain Walter Hynes, Captain Timothy Stackpole and Firefighter Joseph Henry, who were relatives of the Kearney community.

This scholarship is awarded each year to an incoming freshman whose life was personally affected by the events of September 11, as reflected in an essay.

Gina Marie DeSantis, a Bay Ridge resident, received the award this year. Her essay illustrated her feelings after her 23-year-old cousin, Terry, died in the attacks. She was inspired to keep her cousin’s memory alive through her songs and poetry.
