Gateway Park’s ‘Open House New York’

Gateway National Recreational Area will participate in Open House New York, for the third annual celebration of New York City’s architectural and historic treasures. Ranger-guided and volunteer-led tours will be offered at three of the Jamaica Bay Unit’s sites: Floyd Bennett Field, Fort Tilden, and Jacob Riis Park.

Floyd Bennett Field: Ryan Visitor Center, (718) 338-3799, Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9. Tours will begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

New York City’s first airport terminal is one of the most significant buildings in aviation history. Highlights of the tour will be visits to the control tower and the passenger-loading tunnel.

Fort Tilden: Visitor Contact Station, (718) 318-4300. Saturday, October 8 at 1 p.m., and Sunday, October 9 at 1 p.m. From 1917 to 1971, Fort Tilden defended New York City and the nation from its enemies. See how coastal defense developed through the Twentieth Century.

Visit Battery Harris east, including the bombproof interior and observation platform on top, and learn about Cold War-era Nike Missile sites.

Jacob Riis Park: Bath House, (718) 318-4300. Saturday, October 8 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, October 9 at 11 a.m.

Jacob Riis Park is one of the best-preserved examples of 1930s park architecture, and New Deal construction. The grounds and the newly renovated bathhouse will be featured.
