Locals and family members gathered on Sunday night at sundown for a touching memorial flag raising at the soon-to-be-completed Tribute Park at the northern end of Beach 116 Street. The ceremony included the raising of the American Flag on the site and the playing of taps for those who died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The ceremony was a low-key one with little publicity and advance notice. The Wave, in fact, was not notified of the ceremony until after its September 9 issue had already gone to press. Local firefighters raised the American Flag to half-staff at the new Tribute Park at sundown on Sunday, September 11, to honor those who died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center four years earlier. While the park will not be officially open for another month, approximately 100 local politicians, activists and family members gathered on the looming darkness to raise the flag and honor the dead.
