Local firefighters raised the American Flag to half-staff at the new Tribute Park at sundown on Sunday, September 11, to honor those who died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center four years earlier. While the park will not be officially open for another month, approximately 100 local politicians, activists and family members gathered on the looming darkness to raise the flag and honor the dead. Last Wednesday several young Belle Harbor residents raised money for Hurricane Katrina victims on Beach 139 Street and Cronston. Anyone that gave a donation received a hand-painted seashell. All of the money raised will go to the hurricane victims through the American Red Cross. The Rochelle family lives in a newly-built home that stands on the corner of Beach 131 Street and Newport Avenue, where American Airlines Flight 587 crashed, killing five local residents on the ground and destroying a number of homes. This week, a number of local children used the home as a venue for selling shells to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. On Friday, cars continually stopped at the home to donate to the victims. The money raised will be turned over to St. Francis de Sales Church as part of their fundraising effort.
