I just marveled at the works of art on display at the kiddie art show at the Colony Theatre this weekend. I thought a good job was done by: Bryn Nagel, a crochet bag; Lucia, Colin Jackson for Shapes; Julia Morgan; Briani McGoughlin, (10); Alyssa Durante (10), Portrait of a lighthouse. I was drawn to an exceptional piece, The Owls. Lo and behold, it was done by Hollis Lehv (7), the grandchild of Helen and Peter Danzilo, and there was her little sister Clara’s work, “Caterpillar to Butterfly” above it. And she is only three. Wonder how they are at poetry? Gramma’s a beautiful poet, too. Kathleen Klein, age 11, granddaughter of Eleanor McNamee, was very good too. They did have some exquisite pieces by Deacon, Deschler and Paul Kmiatek made out of cast iron that sold for $400. But, the little tots stole the show.
At St. Thomas More Hall the Garden Show was going on, and it certainly showed off Frances Abbracciammento’s talent. She won four prizes, and she gets younger-looking every day. (She must be taking the anti aging mouse medicine that keeps them alive and fit for 120 years). She is a Wonder Woman. Don’t know how she does it??? Beauty and the Beach was another winner; Jean Beagle Metz, 1st prize and Johanna Clare Metz. Janet Neibel for “Anything Goes,” Janet Israel, “Food for Thought”; Betty Monahan, “Love is in the Air” table setting; Stella Mills and Kathleen Devlin to name a few. It was just a beautiful array of flowers; some even came out of driftwood. Pretty! You had to be there to appreciate it. Maureen McGuire was Chairlady.
Congratulations to County Monahan, which won the 90 band Hunter Mt. Competition. Ryan Sheehan, Bryan Leary, Peter Mulhaooland from the Breezy Point Celtic Club all competed.
Of course, we know Kennedy’s is a fine restaurant and it is just hopping on Saturday Nites with a live band, dancing and great food. But, Helene and Peter Danzilo introduced me to the Belle Harbor Steak House at Beach 116 Street, a short distance from Breezy. The décor is attractive, subdued and very pleasant. You can get a delicious meal here. I had the soft shell crabs, Helene had the beef medallions and Peter had the veal. We had no complaints. Just devoured with joy. On the other hand, if you have a family and kids don’t mind the noise or the travel to Ozone Park, Don Peppe’s is the place for you. According to Helene and Peter, it’s the very best Italian food around. They proved to be right. You have to order family style. No individual orders. One soup, salad and entree for all. But the food is so, so good, the seasonings are great and whatever they serve is fabulous. It is just like eating at home. No fancy dressing, and the waiters are warm and friendly, and they give good service. But, this is only when and if you need a change from Kennedy’s.
Looking for bargains? Well, you don’t have to go off the beach. Right here at the Surf Shop they are having an end of summer clearance sale. Around the city…Scores (Gentlemen’s Club) is opening up in Las Vegas.
At a fundraiser, Klass Kids, to prevent and help children who are victims of violence, presented the Crown Awards. At the beautiful reception and dinner, the entertainer was Bob Arno, who performed “The Art of the Steal,” about how a pickpocket could lift your wallet and other valuables from you with ease. He co-authored a book with Bambi Vencent, which is a “Must Have.” It is called, ”Travel Advisory!”
It tells you how to avoid thefts, cons, and street scams while traveling.
Don’t leave home without it.
