Beach Volleyball Celebrates 16th Anniversary With Gala Party
The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League will celebrate the completion of their 16 th season at a gala awards dinner on Friday 9/16 at the Beach Club on 116th Street. Players love to visit the Beach Club, which has been a long-time sponsor of the RBVL, and a good time is predicted for all attendees.
All of those folks who are still gun-shy from the deluge of rain we had this summer will be happy to know that this party is indoors and the weather forecast is for a dry and air-conditioned night! A great party band, Souled Out, will provide live music. Of course, you will provide the dancing. Admission is $60 and will include a buffet dinner as well as an open bar.
160 people have already responded, paid for their tickets and formed tables and this is your last chance to get a ticket. If you haven’t done so already, please call Rocky at 718-338-3951, Denise at 718-474-2512 or Bugsy at 347-413-3563 to make your reservation. Even better, drop your cash or check off at Bugsy’s house. Money talks! Our maximum capacity was 180 people and we are trying to expand that by a few but the physical space of the room will not allow much more.
Awards will be given out to the 6 division champs, Freedhand’s Court Champs, Fillmore Insurance, The Mahooshkas, the Sandbusters, Coppersmiths and the Brooklyn Transplants and some surprise awards will almost certainly follow. Bring your dancing shoes or your “Cement Shoes”, whatever you need to kick up a storm. Bugsy recommends wearing footwear that you can kick off easily. Dress any way that makes you feel comfortable.
Last year the fashion ranged from casual beach to elegant chic. Several outstanding Hawaiian shirts showed up as well as some classy dresses and you can expect more of the same this year. Maybe we’ll even see some referees for a change. They’ll be the ones with the striped shirts and whistles. Our good friends from the Graybeards will be on hand as well to take registrations for the Graybeards Blood Drive, which is scheduled for 9/18. For those of you who have asked the question, “What do they want now, blood?”
The answer is “Yes”!
After the big dinner-dance you can take six months off and not think about volleyball until February, when the planning begins for 2006. We hope to see everyone back for another go at this sport we love so much. Your enthusiasm and sportsmanship make the league so great! The games are over but summer is not, so we’ll still see you on the beach. (Maybe at the Michelle O’Neill tournament in Long Beach on Saturday 9/10.)
