Back To School Reminder: Get Your Vaccinations

With New York City public schools opening on Thursday, September 8, the NYC Health and Education Departments remind parents to get their children vaccinated before school starts. All children attending pre-kindergarten or kindergarten, and grades 1 through 12 must show proof of having received a complete medical evaluation.

Dr. Jane Zucker, from the Department of Mental Health and Hygiene, said, “This year, there is a new requirement-6th graders must be immunized against chicken pox if they have not already either been immunized or had the disease. We urge parents to speak with their doctors about their child’s vaccination schedule. Even families that don’t have health insurance have access to free or low-cost options. Every child can get immunized.”

“Getting all required shots will protect children against serious illnesses,” said Dr. Roger Platt, Assistant Commissioner for the Bureau of School Health. “It is also the law.”
