Steamfitters, Electricians Seek Recruits

Two unions in the New York area are looking for recruits for their apprenticeship programs.

The Joint Steamfitting Apprenticeship Committee in Long Island City will conduct recruitment from September 12 through September 30 for 600 apprentices. Applications can be obtained at the Knights of Columbus, George W. Hudson Council, 49-18 Queens Boulevard and 50 Street in Woodside, Queens, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Completed applications must be returned by September 30. Applicants must be interviewed by the committee, and take a pre-employment drug test at the sponsor’s expense, if accepted in the program.

The Westchester-Fairfield Joint Electrical Apprenticeship Committee, IBEW Local 3, is looking for 50 apprentices, with the recruitment process starting on September 12. Applications can be obtained by sending a registered letter only to Westchester-Fairfield Joint Electrical Apprenticeship Committee, PO Box 343, White Plains, NY 10605-0332. Letters cannot be postmarked before September 12 or after September 30, and the first 450 requests will receive applications. Applicants must have lived within a 50-mile radius of White Plains, including Con-necticut, for the past two years, and must take a physical examination by a physician selected by the committee.

Both committees require that applicants:

Be at least 18 years old.

Have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.

Take an aptitude test.

Pay a $20 non-refundable processing fee.
