Slammed Through Store Window By Errant Auto

By Howard Schwach

An unidentified Far Rockaway woman waiting for a bus on Mott Avenue was hurled through the window of a nearby store when an out of control car crossed the busy thoroughfare, police sources say.

The Toyota Camry was exiting the McDonald’s parking lot nearby Beach Channel Drive and Mott Avenue, when the brakes reportedly failed and the car crossed the street, striking the woman and hurling her into Express Shoe and Photo Center, according to eyewitnesses. The car stopped short of going through the store windows. As it backed up, locals tried to protect the victim from the moving car, police say.

One witness told reporters that the woman was hit so hard that she was knocked out of her sneakers. The eyewitness told reporters that she said that she could not feel her legs.

Police sources say that the driver of the car, Sydney Mayne, 39, of Far Rockaway, told investigators that her “brakes wouldn’t catch” as she exited the parking lot. The Daily News reported that the driver was shook up and disconsolate, saying that she “did not want to hurt anybody.”

People on the street rushed to comfort the woman, who was unconscious for a time, according to eyewitnesses. Cuts covered her face and arms. She was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where she is reported in serious condition.
