PEP Officer Helps Nab Bike Thieves
Park Enforcement Patrol Officer Eugene Gee (above) recently helped two Rockaway Beach visitors get their bikes back from thieves. The visitors flagged down Gee on August 12 and pointed out two boys, who were quickly pedaling away from the “Surfing Only” beach on their bikes. Gee – riding a fast all-terrain vehicle – chased the thieves to a building in the Dayton complex, where he aided police in apprehending them. “I felt bad for them,” Gee said of the boys who nearly lost their wheels, which were modified to carry surfboards. “They were expensive bikes, too,” he added. Linda Kittle, a Broad Channel resident who was hosting the boys who nearly became theft victims, said, “Officer Gee went above and beyond the call of duty… Had it not been for Officer Gee, our friends’ sons would have never gotten those bicycles back. He never hesitated to get involved.” It was unclear if Gee would receive recognition from the Department of Parks and Recreation for his actions.
