From the Desk of Lew M. Simon, Democratic District Leader, 23 rd A.D. Part B

We are very excited about a new petition drive we have put forward for the reactivation of the old Rockaway Beach line of the LIRR. We urge everyone who can to feel free to pick up a petition to collect signatures as well as coming up to sign them.

We invite all to attend an update of strategic planning for the reactivation of the old Rockaway Beach line. We need everyone to work together as the signatures collected will be presented to Mayor Bloomberg and other mayoral candidates, Governor Pataki, US Senators Clinton and Schumer, the MTA, LIRR and Port Authority.

This vital meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. sharp at the Good Government Regular Democratic Club, 112-20 Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway Park on Monday August 29. Please attend and support this great cause.

Our 18th annual dinner dance will be held on Wednesday, November 9, at Russo’s On The Bay, 162-45 Cross Bay Boulevard, Howard Beach. We will be honoring Kevin Kelly, Business Agent/Local Union 46, Metallic Lathers and Reinforcing Ironworkers, Michelle Lloyd-Bey, School Superintendent District 27, Patricia Tubridy, Principal/Channel View Academy of Research, Regine LiFranc, Assistant Principal Guidance/Beach Channel High School, Thomas O’Keefe, Board of Directors/Breezy Point Cooperative, Louis and Mary Romas, community activists, Daniel M. O’Connell Post 272 American Legion, Susan Bertolini, Chairperson of “Save” Saint Stanislaus BM School, Ozone Park and Jodi Orlow-Mackoff, Esq., Attorney and community activist.

Dinner and live music, raffles for large prizes and 50/50 tickets that can be purchased now at $5 per ticket will be available. Tickets are $75 per person or $1,050 for a table of 14. Please make check payable to the Good Government Regular Democratic Club, 112-20 Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway Park 11694. For information call 945-1216. Your attendance at our dinner dance and advertising in our dinner journal helps keep our office running.

On Sunday, July 31, we had a friend in need benefit for John McLoughlin Sr, and in support of his lovely wife Sheri. At this fundraising event many of our local businesses donated prizes and gift certificates. Among them were Jay & Lloyd’s Deli of Brooklyn, East Meets West, Brown’s Hardware and Pickles and Pies. We urge everybody to shop locally and remember those merchants who came through for us in this time of need.

It felt like a political convention. Councilman Joe Addabbo, Democratic District Leaders Frank Gulluscio and Geraldine Chapey, Dr. Geraldine Chapey, a New York State Regent, and Republican District Leaders Eddie O’Hare and Terry Ariola were present. A donation was made by our great Assemblywoman, Audrey Pheffer who was on a much needed vacation. A nice donation was made by the Assemblywoman’s Chief of Staff, Joann Shapiro.

The President of the 100 Precinct council Jate Doremus and his lovely wife Sandee of Councilman Addabbo’s office as well as Pat McCabe of Joe’s Howard Beach office were present. Our good friends Matt and Jack Safos and Joe Mure were present and made donations.

Our next trip to Atlantic City will be on Saturday September 17. The cost is $33 with $20 returned. We leave at 5:30 p.m. and return at 8 a.m. and have 81/2 hours to enjoy. Bagels and cream cheese courtesy of Beach Bagels. Call 945-1216 for reservations. We wish to thank our regular sponsors of our Democratic club meetings, Beach Bagels, Key Food and Wendy’s.

Hats off to Congressman Anthony Weiner. The recently enacted Transportation Act includes $15 million for purchase of Rockaway ferries and funds for improved traffic flow on Rockaway Point Boulevard with a traffic signal at Reid Avenue, pedestrian safety around PS 114, improved traffic flow around Noel Road and Cross Boulevard including demolition of the old BCVFD building, rehabilitation of the Riis Park boardwalk and improvements in the Far Rockaway Business District. Thank you Congressman for bringing the “bacon”, the money needed to improve transportation in the Rockaways, Broad Channel and Breezy Point. We urge everyone to pick up the phone and call Congressman Weiner at (718) 520-9001 to congratulate him on a job well done.
