Jameson’s Last Shot Wins St. Francis Summer Classic Title
It was a relatively quiet week at the St. Francis Summer Classic with one resounding boom. Megan Donohue’s driving hook shot with three seconds remaining hit the rim and bounced in. The opposite rim was not as kind to Kerry Anderson. Her jumper at the buzzer hit back iron and would not fall in, as Jameson’s claimed the initial Women’s Open League ‘B’ championship, 30-28 over Blackwater Inn. Captain Kristin Fraser deftly guided her squad through a nailbiter sparked by the play of Jennifer Lawler, Katie Carey, and Clare Syvertson.
Kerry Divilly pushed most of the right buttons for the Blackwater who led through most of the second half behind the play of Katie Raphael, Ellen Cahill, and Alison Cashen. Congratulations to all and to Commissioners Kelli Donohue and Kenny Whelan on a fine first year.
The championship game was preceded by the Girls High School division which began play on Monday. After the first two nights, Animal Hospital of Bay Ridge is the early favorite. However, much may change next week as many stellar players return from camp. Games are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:15 and 8:30.
Rain on Monday halted the Boys Grammar Senior and High School semifinals before any games could be completed.
The Grammar Seniors will resume this Monday at 7:00, with the Championship Tuesday at 8:15. The Boys Grammar Middle Championship starts the night at 7:00. The Boys High School was scheduled to resume Wednesday August 10 with the championship the following night at 6:00. Mens’ Open League quarterfinals followed at 7:00 and 8:15.
