Rockaway Girls Win District 27 Title
For the first time in Rockaway Little League, the 9/10 year-old Girl’s Softball won the 2005 District 27 Little League Flag! The girls met an undefeated WORKS Little League for the District 27 Flag Championship game at Rockaway’s home field. Caroline Strehle gave the girls the home team advantage in the coin toss, and the 1st game got underway. Meaghan King took the mound and WORKS came on strong, scoring 2 runs at the end of their 3 outs.
Rockaway’s starting line-up of Briana Hart at 1st, Jenna Hofmann at SS, Marissa Scott at 2nd, Catherine Murphy at 3rd, Tara Muoio in LF, Caroline Strehle at Home, Meaghan King on the mound, Victoria Moriarty in CF and Alyssa Durante in RF answered right back with their bats, with each of them scoring. Ashley Basta came in to play a great substitute Catcher, and Julia Falcone and Kristie Carey came in to relieve the Outfield. They also scored each of their times at bat as well.
Meaghan King pitched great, with 5 strikeouts and hitting a triple as well. Marissa Scotto and Briana Hart each added in a double. At the end of the 1st game towards the District 27 Championship, Rockaway won due to great base running, hitting and defensive play.
The 2nd game against WORKS Little League put Tara Muoio on the mound for Rockaway. Tara pitched a great game as well for Rockaway, getting 4 strikeouts. Caroline Strehle again gave us the home team advantage in the coin toss, and played outstanding in the Catcher position. Kristin Henschel started for us in LF, and came in to score 3 runs.
Briana Hart started this game off great by hitting the 1st home run of our season. Ashley Basta, Caroline Strehle, Briana Hart, Alyssa Durante and Victoria Moriarty got on base every time they were up at bat. Jenna Hofmann, Marissa Scotto, and Catherine Murphy made some outstanding defensive plays during this game. Julia Falcone and Kristie Carey each added key hits. At the end of the 2nd Championship game, Rockaway again came away victorious. With this win, Rockaway 9/10 year-old Girls became the 1st team to ever win a District 27 Flag in the history of Rockaway Little League Softball!
Marty Andresen, President of Rockaway Little League, was on hand to congratulate the girls. All of the girls signed the Championship Flag, which will now be displayed proudly in the Rockaway Little League Clubhouse. The girls went on to face the winner of the 9/10 Little League Softball from Staten Island for the NYC Title. Megan LaCognata came back to rejoin the team after vacation. Unfortunately, they lost to the team from Staten Island. But what a great run the girls had!
The girls were coached by Bill Murphy, Dawn Duggan and Barbara King. They also had the benefit of instruction by 3 of Bishop Kearney’s Softball players; Michelle Kenel, Kerry King and Nora Marley.
