Elaine J. Castas Former City Council Assistant

  • Elaine J. Castas, a longtime Rockaway resident, died July 20.
  • Castas was a former assistant to City Councilman Walter Ward, the first district manager for Community Board 14. She held that job for 10 years. Castas was also a special assistant to two Queens Borough Presidents in the areas of community affairs and parks. She held a masters degree from Queens College.

    Castas is survived by her husband, retired New York City firefighters George Castas.

    Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery on Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m.

    Harold A. Patterson

    Chemical Engineer

    Harold A. Patterson, a longtime Rockaway resident, died July 18. He was 76.

    Patterson, a chemical engineer, was born in New York on July 30, 1928. He was a member of St. Thomas More Church.

    He is survived by his cousins, James C. Farley and Arline Farley.

    A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thomas More. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside.

    James M. Slattery

    Hotel Maintenance Worker

    James M. Slattery, a Rockaway resident for 20 years, died July 14. He was 74.

    Slattery, a hotel maintenance worker, was born in Manhattan on September 3, 1930. He was a member of St. Camillus Parish.

    Slattery was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas.

    He is survived by his wife, Elaine; son, James; and daughters, Elizabeth King and Frances Dooley.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Camillus. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.

    Thomas J. Toomey

    Subway Advertising Laborer

    Thomas J. Toomey, a longtime resident of Rockaway, died July 16. He was 95.

    Toomey, a subway advertising laborer, was born in Brooklyn on July 7, 1910. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a former council member of St. Camillus, a St. Camillus usher and former proprietor of Toomey’s Bar and Grill.

    Toomey was preceded in death by his wife, Phillis.

    He is survived by his sons, Thomas, James and Richard Toomey; daughter, Patricia Donohue; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

    Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Camillus. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey.
