‘Suspicious Packages’ Keeps PD, FD Hopping

In the wake of the terrorist attack on the transportation system in London, England last week, many in New York City have increased their awareness of “suspicious packages” left lying in public places. Last week, the Cross Bay Bridge was closed down for an hour when somebody left a bag of garbage nearby the walkway. On Thursday morning, this package (right) was left standing nearby Beach 90 Street and the Rockaway Freeway. There was talk of stopping trains on the A Line and evacuating one of the buildings in the Hammel Houses nearby, but units from the NYPD’s elite Emergency Services Unit (ESU) responded and took the package to the police department’s bomb disposal area at Rodman’s Neck in the Bronx. It was not clear at press time as to what the package contained. Police sources say that the number of reports of suspicious packages in New York City has gone up more than 30 percent since the London attacks.
