Irish Heritage Committee Announces Weekend Activities

The weekend of July 22 has been designated as Irish Heritage Weekend in Rockaway.

There will be a number of activities at various venues that weekend, all dedicated to Irish Heritage, Irish food and Irish music.

On  Friday, July 22nd, the Irish Circle becomes the first venue for the weekend’s activities.

At 9 p.m., Pride -playing cover songs of Ireland’s #1 Band - U2, will perform.

On Saturday, July 23, the focus moves to Rugby with an 11 a.m. Rugby Classic at Fort Tilden that features Old Age vs. Youth. At 1 p.m., after the game, the doors of the Rugby Clubhouse will open with Irish Vendors and DJ Tub-a-Booze.

At 2 p.m. there will be Opening Ceremonies featuring the Breezy Point Bagpipers and the Irish Steppers. There will also be a presentation made by Bob Johnson.

At 3 p.m., Shilelagh Law will perform traditional and original Irish music.

At 6 p.m., DJ Tubs will take over with the Breezy Point Bagpipers.

At 7 p.m., The Ruffians will perform the best of Celtic Rock as well as more traditional music.

At 10:30 p.m., the Blackwater Pub presents Wine with Sue.

The events will continue on Sunday, July 24 at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club.

The festivities will begin at noon with a Traditional Irish Breakfast Brunch Buffet - RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: 917-842-3888. There is limited seating. Doors Open at the BHYC, Irish Vendors; Quality Irish Imports, Irish & Celtic T-shirts & Eire’s Irish Gifts.

Food will be provided by Jim & Mary of O’Ludwig’s Catering.

At 2:00 pm there will be a Welcome/ Opening Speech/Gaelic National Anthem. Father Lou’s Blessing of B.H.Y.C. on its 100th Year Anniversary will follow. Irish Steppers (young 6-12 year olds steppers & County Tyrone Bagpipers.

At 3 p.m., Celtic Cross will perform. Celtic Cross is a 7-piece band playing traditional Irish Music.

At  5 p.m., O’Malley’s Irish Steppers & County Tyrone Bagpipers will perform. Then, at  7 p.m. the Emerald will perform traditional Irish tunes.
