‘Suspicious Package’ Closes Bridge For Hour
Motorists attempting to transit the Cross Bay Bridge on Thursday morning found themselves in classic gridlock while police from the elite Emergency Service Unit checked a “suspicious package” left on the walkway near the center of the bridge.
Police sources say that the bridge was closed at both ends at about 7:15 a.m. when a call came to the 911 emergency system that there was a package on the northbound walkway. Units from the 100 Precinct quickly closed the bridge to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Specialists from the NYPD found upon investigation that the package was harmless and the bridge was reopened after about an hour.
One police source said that people were nervous due to the transportation bombings that took place in London, England, earlier that day.
“People are seeing shadows,” the police officer said. “We’re glad that people report these things. You never know when it might be for real.”
