Congratulations To Rabbi Marjorie Slome

On Saturday, June 25, Rabbi Marjorie Slome was honored at the annual West End Temple Dinner Dance. The dinner dance was held at the West End Temple itself. What a beautiful edifice. The evening began with a sumptuous reception in the magnificent Sylvane Room.

It was followed by an elegant dinner.

Everyone enjoyed themselves.

The honored guest –Rabbi Marjorie Slome was joined by her husband, Kenneth Stern, an attorney, author and Specialist on Anti-Semitism for the American Jewish Committee. The Rabbi’s two children—Daniel and Emily and the Rabbi’s sister and other members of her family were there to salute her for her outstanding accomplishments.

The officers of the Temple—Ms. Marsha Weber, President; Jeffrey Zweifler, 1st Vice President; Rowena Schwab, 2nd Vice President; Charles Thau, 3rd Vice President; Stan Gelda, Treasurer; and Chaya Kirchein, Secretary were at there to celebrate with the Rabbi.

Rabbi Slome was ordained as a rabbi in 1987 at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City.

Since her ordination, she has served as the Rabbi at the West End Temple, the interim Rabbi at Temple Sinai in Pittsburgh, Rabbi/ Educator at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope, Brooklyn and was director of various programs for the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services in New York City. In her twenty-plus years of service to the Jewish community, she has also worked for the Union of American Hebrew Congregation (now known as the Union for Reform Judaism), JUS-JIR, Jewish Campus Activities Board in Philadelphia (Hillel) and many other Jewish organizations.

She is a past co-chairperson of the Women’s Rabbinic Network, a national organization of Reform Jewish women rabbis, a past president of the Brooklyn Association of Reform Rabbis, as well as past chairperson of the Women’s Rabbinic Alliance.

Rabbi Slome has also served on the Board of Trustees of Congregation Beth Elohim, and sits on the steering committee of L.E.A.R.N., a Parent Association committee of The Berkeley Carroll School dedicated to advocating for children with learning differences.

Slome holds an MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning and a BA from the University of Cincinnati.

I look forward to continuing to work with Rabbi Slome.

On Sunday, June 26, we joined with our fellow members of the Rockaway Music and Arts Council Board of Directors and the community to enjoy the season’s first concert at Fort Tilden. The Klez Dispensers were great. Many members of the audience sang along as they played familiar tunes. Sharon Gabriel did a fantastic and professional job as the Master of Ceremonies at the Concert.

Our always gracious and fashionable chairperson Barbara Eisenstadt was elegantly dressed in a very pretty outfit for a wedding that she and Marvin were attending after the concert.

Please join us next Sunday evening July 10 for the next in the Sunset Picnic Concert series at Fort Tilden at 6PM. Kenny Vance (a Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer) and The Planotones will be playing their way into our hearts again.

This group is very popular and will put on an excellent show.

Kudos to John Musameci for planning and implementing this year’s great concert series. John is a talented, capable and enthusiastic leader. He has the pulse of the community. We are very indebted to him for the endless hours of painstaking and loving attention that he devotes to make these concerts successful.

On Friday, July 1, we attended the St. Thomas More Parish Show. This is the 17th year that they have had the show. It is really hard to believe that there are so many talented people in Breezy Point.
