Off-Duty Police Officer Assaulted On Beach 98 Street

By Howard Schwach

An off-duty police officer escorting his girlfriend home from an evening out was assaulted by several men in front of 319 Beach 98 Street about 10:30 p.m. last Tuesday evening.

According to police sources, the still-unidentified officer, who does not work in Rockaway, was taking his girlfriend home when they encountered six men who were hanging out in front of her building.

Some comments were made to the couple, and the cop decided to escort his friend to her apartment.

As he was getting out of his car, one of the men reportedly threatened the police officer. As the man approached the officer, he reportedly identified himself and took out his cell phone to call 911.

The unidentified man then hit the officer on the side of his head. In the scuffle that ensued, the officer lost his gun and holster, which was knocked off his belt.

He recovered his gun, but was kicked and beaten by at least two of the men, one of who allegedly had brass knuckles.

The officer was taken to Peninsula Hospital center, where he was treated for contusions and abrasions and releases.

Police say that one man, still unidentified, was arrested for the assault.
