Shots Riddle Far Rockaway Lobby

An NYPD officer marks ballistic evidence at the crime scene.An NYPD officer marks ballistic evidence at the crime scene. Police are investigating after gunfire erupted early Wednesday morning in the lobby of a walkup apartment in Far Rockaway.

About 10 shots were fired inside the lobby at 12-56 Central Avenue at about 12:30 a.m., police said. Officers on patrol heard the shots as they rang out and responded to the scene immediately. Upon their arrival, police witnessed several people fleeing the scene. They identified a black male in his 20s, dressed wearing black clothes, as the gunman. Officers gave chase, but the suspect disappeared into a backyard at 12-66 Augustina Avenue, Far Rockaway. A perimeter was established, and police called in a helicopter and search dogs, but the man got away.

Investigators recovered bullet fragments, shell casings, bullets and the suspect’s black t-shirt.

No one was injured by the gunfire, police said. Bullets pierced the glass in at least two of the lobby’s doors.
